I guess now is as good a time as any to tell you that….. I was juried into the 2014 Calgary Stampede Western Showcase! Its a dream of a lifetime to be included in this group of amazing, incredibly talented artists!
I’ve burnt up my sketch book, done a few massive orders of supplies & I’m on my way. I DO NOT want to even know how many days until it starts, it will freak me out & I won’t have a chance of falling asleep.
Some of the work is exciting, inspiring & interesting; and some is not. Like yesterday, part of my day was spent drilling holes in Buffalo Nickels! I use these nickels in my clasps on all my necklaces, and throughout my pieces more & more. Today I’m doing what any serious coin collector would shudder – drilling holes in them! I never tell the collectors that I buy them from that I’m going to drill holes in them & solder them to things! These ones aren’t valuable at all to coin collectors, as the dates are worn off.
Lots of people ask me about why I use the nickels, as they’re American & I’m not! To me, they are an iconic symbol of the West. The Buffalo Nickel has a storied history with the identity of both the Indian & the Buffalo never to be revealed. The nickels are actually not that hard to get a hold of, especially if you don’t care if the date is worn off! I do buy rolls of dated coins for cufflinks, rings & pendants.
I’m going to be posting every Thursday about my progress and preparation for the Western Showcase. I hope to show all of these super cool projects I have in my head & sketch book coming to reality!
